Sony will end games on disc starting in 2028!

Right after Rockstar announced GTA 6 without discs in its "physical" edition, Sony also joins this shameful trend and confirms that PlayStation games, whether first-party or not, will no longer have physical disc editions, following the same model implemented by Rockstar.

⚠️ A true hostage situation

This news is TERRIBLE for players and collectors, who will now become HOSTAGES of PSN, risking the loss of their titles for unfair reasons. Here are some examples:

1. Games can disappear from the store. If you did not buy them before, you may never be able to legally get them again. Recent cases include Ubisoft, Activision and indie games removed because of music licenses, contract issues or corporate decisions. On PlayStation, games like Gran Turismo face the same problem, with discs often being the only way to access them.
2. Risk of losing everything in your account. If your PSN account is banned, even unfairly, you lose access to all purchased games. If the platform ever shuts down, unlikely but possible, goodbye library. Region issues and country changes also make things harder.
3. No resale, lending or gifting. For many players who do not care about collecting, a finished physical game could be sold to recover part of the money. A digital game, whether on PSN or as a redeem code, stays locked forever to your account, with no resale value.
4. Manipulated prices and sales. Prices rise and fall according to the publisher's will. Digital games are often MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE than physical copies at launch and during sales. DLCs and expansions can cost more than the base game over time.
5. Total dependence on internet and online services. No internet, or bad internet? You cannot download, cannot update and sometimes cannot even play. Service outages mean you may be blocked from playing something you already paid for.
6. Worse or altered versions. Publishers can change games after launch, remove content, alter mechanics or add microtransactions. "Definitive" or remastered versions sometimes replace the original version you bought.

📀 Opinion / criticism

For years, I was an avid collector of physical media, and I fulfilled my role and responsibility as a content creator by spreading its importance to everyone my voice could reach. The market trend had long suggested that this day could come, but I keep my head high knowing I did my part, hoping that something can still change before then.

This is not the time to give up

Let's fight. Demand answers from Sony's leadership, apply pressure, share this and make noise. Physical media, preservation, resale and ownership are not minor details: they are players' rights.
